Select all income categories that apply. If you are unsure, choose Other income. You can also create a general organizer without income selections.
Select categories only. Do not enter names, Social Security numbers, bank details or private records. Selections and ready marks stay in page memory and clear when you reload.
Choose the tax year first, then select every applicable income and situation category. The generator combines a general preparation list with relevant records, removes shared duplicates and explains why each item appears. Mark records ready as you gather them. Keep the full checklist for your preparer to review; it does not establish completeness or filing readiness.
Add employer statements, dependent support/residency records and care-provider payment records to your general organizer. Eligibility is reviewed separately.
Select self-employed income to gather business income, expense evidence, asset records and tax payment confirmations. Add investment income when relevant to include broker statements and basis records.
Prepare retirement distribution/rollover records and applicable 1095-A statements, together with the general records. Ask about any additional situation-specific requirements.
The checklist focuses on common individual federal-return records. A selected income, deduction or credit topic creates a document prompt; it does not determine taxability, eligibility, filing status or the amount you can claim. Separate entity returns, state-specific obligations, international matters, amendments and unusual transactions need additional review.
For 2026, save current records while the year is in progress and collect statements when furnished. Final-year instructions and your circumstances may change the list. For 2025 tips and overtime, supporting logs and pay statements can matter when payer forms do not separately identify relevant compensation.

Start with identity records, the previous return, relevant tax payments and changes in your circumstances. Contact the issuer, keep correction correspondence and discuss available records with your preparer. Do not assume a missing form removes a reporting obligation. This tool does not determine filing or notice-response deadlines.
It focuses on individual U.S. federal returns, including sole-proprietor and rental records. K-1 and foreign activity selections add preparation prompts; they do not cover separate entity returns, every international disclosure or state-specific filing rules.
